The British Board Of Classification are a group of people who make the age limits of movies due to:
Once they have done that they categorise the films into age restricted movies which range from Universal, PG, 12A, 12, 15, 18. Universal movies don't contain any form of nudity or drugs, and are movies that any age can watch as is it family friendly. PG which stand for parental guidance, these are movies that aren't scary or have content that may physically harm a child; but will need an adult to accompany them. A 12A is a movie that suggests that you need be at least 12 to watch the movie however if you are, younger than 12 you must be accompanied with an adult as the content may be either to scary or disturbing for someone younger than 12. A 12A has some form of nudity, fowl language, fictional deaths, some sort of gore and high levels of action. A 12 suggests that you need to be 12 and over to be able to watch the movie as there may be: moderate drug use, mild nudity, mild use of fowl language, mild discrimination, moderate violence. 15 suggests that you need to 15 or over to watch the movie as they are become inappropriate or terrifying depending if it is either a horror. 15s consist of nudity, fowl language, drug abuse, sexual violence, discrimination, high levels of gore, paranormal threat, high horrific content. 18s suggest that you have to be 18 and above to watch the movie as it will contain: High sexual context, sexual violence, high levels of profanity, high drug use, scenes of a disturbing nature, High levels of threat, high levels of discrimination.
The term classification means systematic placement into categories. When films are finished after the post production they are sent over to the BBFC to be classified, under published guidelines to see which age restriction it falls under. They check the movie for its legal acceptability and see if the film could inflict psychological harm, or emotional harm. And if it occurs that it isn't legally acceptable or will inflict some form of harm then the movie will be banned, or restricted. For example in 2009 a directed by Tom Sicks called the Human Centipede came out which was a horror film, based on a evil scientist that tortured humans and tortured and turned into a centipede by sowing their faces to each other's rear end in a chain. The movie was so disturbing and created so much psychological harm that it was banned in the UK by the BBFC.
The specific guidelines for a 15
Discrimination- The work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour, although there may be racist, homophobic or other discriminatory themes and language.
Drugs Drug taking may be shown but the work as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse (for example, through instructional detail). The misuse of easily accessible and highly dangerous substances (for example, aerosols or solvents) is unlikely to be acceptable.
Imitable behaviour Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on detail which could be copied. Whether the depiction of easily accessible weapons is acceptable will depend on factors such as realism, context and setting.
Language There may be strong language. Very strong language may be permitted, depending on the manner in which it is used, who is using the language, its frequency within the work as a whole and any special contextual justification.
Nudity There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context. There may be nudity in a sexual context but usually without strong detail. Sex Sexual activity may be portrayed, but usually without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour, but the strongest references are unlikely to be acceptable unless justified by context. Works whose primary purpose is sexual arousal or stimulation are unlikely to be acceptable.
Threat There may be strong threat and horror. A sustained focus on sadistic or sexual threat is unlikely to be acceptable. Violence Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. Strong sadistic violence is also unlikely to be acceptable. There may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence but the depiction of sexual violence must be discreet and justified by context.
