Conventions in Horror Films
We spent time looking codes and conventions for horror films. Conventions are things that you would expect in particular things. Here are conventions you would get in a horror film.
1) secluded location- these are locations normally set in woods or at a lake or somewhere hundreds of miles away from any human contact or help. These are normally used as warning signs that something is going to go wrong within that setting. Or it would be if they were left in their house alone with no help from others, this would mean that they would have no one to help them out if something went wrong, or if there was something in that house.
2) Characters forget about the threat- This is where the characters forget that the threat is there for example they go to a gas station and there is nobody present ,and they carry on going to where they are going anyway. Or They hear a loud noise and don't do anything about it as they think its just a loud noise.
3) Power is cut- This is where all the power in the house is cut as well as the telephone connection, meaning they cannot see as it normally occurs at night, and they cannot ring anybody to help them get the power back. This is used to raise suspension that something very bad is about to happen.
4) No signal- This is where they have no signal in the area that they are in meaning they cannot contact anyone for help, this shows that something is going to happen and they aren't going to be able to do anything about it as they haven help from outsiders. It also means that they will go where the danger is because they will have no signal so they will go and find out what is making these strange occurrences happen.
5) Someone investigates a strange noise- This is where a loud bang or a cheek occurs in the house that they are in, and a minor actor who isn't as important to the story as the others normally goes to investigate the strange noise and normally ends up dying in the process of doing it. As it comes form some sort of paranormal creature. And the man character never does that as they normally survive.
6) Someone runs upstairs instead of outside- This is the less logical was of escaping the house and this is because, the directors want build suspense as the character would probably end up coming face to face with who ever is in the house which will also be some sort of jump scare.
7) Victim cowers in front of a window or door- In most zombie movies this type of convention will occur and the victim will hide under a window or behind a door thinking they are safe. Then all of a sudden the monster will grab them through the window by breaking it or by punching their hand through the door and grabbing the victim.
8) Victim inexplicably falls over when running away from creature- the character ends up being killed by the creature.
9) Vehicle won't start- the victim tries to get in the car and drive away but the car won't start and the creature ends up getting closer and closer. Until the vehicle finally starts and they end up getting away for a short period of time.
10) The fake scare- suspension starts to build up as music gets louder, when a character goes towards something that look suspicious and then something pops out like a bird or something not remotely scary, but was made to look scary.
11) Warning going unheeded- this is normally when there is a danger sign or something saying do not enter or life at risk if you go through here, and the characters go through anyway despite the warned danger go going through.
12) someone is killed in the first 5 minutes- used as warming sign as there is a massive threat about the area.
13)X years before/after- to establish a back story to explain why it happened or what the result of what happened did in the future.
14) Bad weather - the weather is gloomy and bad to establish something bad is about to happen.
15) short-cut- there is normally a shortcut to a house in the woods where the characters have been warned not to take by others and they end up taking it anyway and out ends up taking them to the danger. And most of the characters end up dead as a result of that.
